A Denverite’s Top Five Winter Must Dos in Wausau, Wisconsin
I’m a Colorado native who moved from Denver to the Wausau area about six months ago. You can learn more about our decision to leave our beloved Colorado in next week’s blog post . Denver will always be one of my favorite cities for the outdoor activities and dining scene. But Wausau has a lot to offer and I’ve loved exploring the area. So far, here are my top five winter activities. Give me more tips and suggestions in the comments below!
1. Cross-country ski at Nine Mile County Forest – at night. Nine Mile is a beautiful network of trails covering 4,900 acres. Check out the nearly four miles of lighted trail at night for a whimsical outdoor experience.
2. Take your kiddo skiing at Granite Peak Resort. If your kiddo is learning to ski, Granite Peak has the perfect beginning ski hill and “magic carpet” to help pull them (and you) up the hill.
3. Grab a coffee or see a show at Whitewater Music Hall. Whitewater hasn’t been open for a year yet, but it’s already an impressive establishment. The owners are committed to serving good coffee during the day and providing excellent live music and a nice drink selection in the evenings.
4. Eat at Pinewood Supper Club in Mosinee. We have a plethora of amazing food in Colorado, but we don’t have supper clubs. Supper club dining is unique to the Midwest – if you’ve been taking them for granted because you grew up around here, don’t! Pinewood has especially good, old-school steakhouse in the best way, food.
5. Play in the snow! Yes, the dreary days can make your mood dreary – but the only way to beat the snow is to embrace it. Get yourself and your family some good gear and get outside – build a snowman, go sledding or tubing at Sylvan Hill, or take a snowshoe hike at Rib Mountain State Park. You can’t beat how accessible these winter activities are in the Wausau area, and a little fresh air will boost your mood. I promise.
Some more winter activities suggested by blogger and Central Wisconsin native, Andrea Larson, are in an earlier blog post.
I’ll be a guest contributor on the IRONBULL blog this year, chronicling my experience of moving from Denver to Wausau. If you’re interested in following along (and giving me any tips!) be sure to subscribe!
